Major Progress with Numbers

Hunter has been very disappointed in the last two weeks that he cannot go to school this year, especially since two good friends and two very loved cousins have all just started kindergarten.  I have explained that he has one more year home with mommy to learn some very important things, visually recognizing numbers being at the top of the list.  He is great at counting objects and can even orally recite numbers even beyond 20, but just does not visually recognize them.  I would point to any given number and rarely could he name it correctly without any hints or something to count.  No big deal; we'll just work on numbers more.  With this goal in mind we have spent the last two weeks pointing out numbers, tracing and writing numbers, running the microwave by pushing numbers, using an old clock to count and name numbers, watching Math Circus, and any other thing I could think of to focus on number recognition.  However I just didn't feel we were making any progress until today....

We were in the car driving down a country road, and from the backseat I hear, "Mom are you speeding?"
To which I reply, "No, why?"  The angelic but insistent voice in the back states, "Well, I just saw that sign.  It said '4, 5' so that is how fast you should be going because it is a speed limit sign."   My mouth drops open for a couple of seconds.  Then I literally shout "You are RIGHT!  Give me a Hi-five for knowing those numbers."  Which he does as he calmly states, "Now that I know my numbers, it's my job to watch for those signs to see how fast you should be going."

I inwardly cringe thinking maybe we've chosen a career as well as learned to recognize a few numbers.  Now I have my very own police officer clocking me everywhere I go.  It's soooo true:  A little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing!!!!!
