Harvesting Happiness

On Monday, our friend, Mr. Rowe, invited us over to his farm to ride along in his combine while he harvested soybeans. Of course, Hunter was thrilled. It was fun to see the development and changes in Hunter since doing this last year. Last fall we rode with Mr. Rowe while he harvested corn, and he hardly said a word the whole time. Of course, his eyes were as big as saucers and he was trying to look everywhere at once. This year, He was full of questions. Of course, he knows Mr. Rowe a little better and that may have helped too. And so it went....What is that pedal for? What does this button do? See that combine on his screen, Mom? What is that spinny part called? How does he make it go up and down? Watch out for that big rock! How do the beans get out of the combine? Do you think we'll get stuck? Can I drive?!
Mr. Rowe was very patient and explained a lot of things. He also let Hunter ride in the semi-truck from the barn out to the field where he was harvesting. We rode for a couple of hours. Hunter was determined to stay until the whole field was done, but unfortunately Mom had other things to get done that day. So we left after promising Hunter that we would drive back by the next day to make sure Mr. Rowe had gotten the field done ok. Later that evening Hunter was pointing out combines just like Mr. Rowe's in a sales magazine that Grandma S. had given him. He was asking me how much each one cost to see if I could buy one for him. Ha, ha! Christmas might be a little disappointing for him this year if that is what he is dreaming about!
