So we finally celebrated Hunter's birthday Saturday evening. As mentioned before he wanted a Dukes of Hazzard theme, which really just means the cake and a few other little odds and ends. (We keep it pretty simple usually). We had to put his party off a week because we got him a really big surprise that wouldn't quite be ready in time for his actual birthday.
This was a total surprise for Hunter because he has wanted a dog for so long, and we (meaning Dad) have said no. It's a yellow lab - no surprise if you know me- and the smile has not come off Hunter's face all weekend.Scott and Jennifer Schaetzlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12973630359530493410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5778160284717806278.post-33217210634142087782013-06-22T07:30:00.000-07:002013-06-22T07:30:13.241-07:00Thanks, AmyHunter decided he wanted a"Dukes of Hazzard" party for his 7th birthday this year. I was really having a hard time finding any party supplies at local stores or even online. When talking to my sister Amy, she said just make something up on the computer. She got me thinking so I had to blog the cup labels and treat bags that we made, plus a couple pictures of the cake. And just to say thanks to her, I included a picture of her favorite nephew baby. Thanks, Amy, and stay tuned for more birthday pics.

Many keep asking how Shelby is doing in all the change that adding a new baby to our family has brought. She has her up days and her down days, but nothing has been what we haven't expected. She loves her baby, but often a little too roughly. She continues daily times of struggle with the amount of attention the baby requires (and takes from her). She has however managed, even during this time, to make small steps forward. First she has learned how to put her socks on by herself and is almost to the point of dressing herself. The socks and shoes are a big accomplishment for a girl who doesn't have good fine motor skills and still lacks a lot of the strength she should have in her fingers and hands. Second, she has started attempting words and gets quite a few beginning syllables. Again, however, this is all on "Shelby Time" meaning she will spontaneously use words when she wants but never when mom or dad tries to get her to say something. She walked to me last night carrying a book to read and clearly said, "boo_"; she has said "ba-oon" numerous times since her favorite thing to play with currently is a big blue punch balloon; she has also used "aw-done" especially when she wants mom to be done doing something she doesn't care for like combing her hair or lotioning her very dry skin. But the best word attempt has happened two times with me, and both times took me by surprise. One night, I was giving her a kiss, then signing and saying "I Love You" as I always do with her when I tuck her in bed, and she tried to sign it back (which she often tries now) and then said "Wuv". Then just a few days ago she was on the couch giving me a big hug around the neck and she said " Iwuv". Each time made my heart jump. I am so anxious to have her start talking and hear all the fun little ways she says things. I'm having a hard time waiting, but as I'm learning with this girl, there is just no rushing her!
Quick update on Caleb...he is doing well. He is now sleeping at least 5 continuous hours during the night (Yay) and is grinning and cooing up a storm. He had his first wellness check last week and already weighs 10 lbs. Scott has started calling him "Big C" (which is a lumber/hardware place around here). I didn't realize until I picked this photo to put on the blog because of his cute grin that he has on his champion eater shirt, ha,ha. I would not actually call him a great eater because he is so slow and sleepy when he eats, but obviously he is getting enough to grow well!!!
People tell me I am not looking it, but trust me, I am feeling it. I'm not complaining because I know what a blessing it is to carry this baby after we thought we would not have any more biologically, but there comes a point where you just can't do things you normally do just fine, like bending over, getting up off the couch, climbing a flight of stairs without totally losing your breath, or walking without feeling like a duck waddling. It has been a pretty good pregnancy, and I'm so thankful I got to do it one more time.

Due to my clotting issues, meds, and higher risks, my doctor has decided to induce me one week from today. So barring any crazy complications, our son will be born next Thursday, Dec. 6. In some ways it is nice to know in advance to have all the details worked out for Hunter and Shelby.
Keep us in your prayers next week that everything goes smoothly for delivery. I would also appreciate prayer for the kids adjustment, especially Shelby, who I think is going to have a really hard time. However after about twenty minutes, Shelby was signing "cold" even though I had 3 layers on that girl. We got her to last about another 30 minutes by blasting the heat in the car, but then she whined and fussed all the way home. Thank goodness "town" is only 7 minutes away.

When we got to the edge of the lawn where the field begins, we suddenly heard some very strange noises start up. It took us both by surprise, but after listening for a minute, I assured Hunter it must be some kind of bird that we startled nesting in the edge of the field, probably the turkeys we had seen off and on throughout the summer. Of course in my mind, I knew that it was not a turkey call but it reassured him and we continued on to the road. Then as the bus squeaked to a stop and Hunter started across this road, I suddenly had this eye-watering over-powering smell of skunk. I thought "Great! Now there is some strange bird/creature and a startled skunk between me and my house, and I can't see either of them until I'm within a few feet of them". Needless to say, I made it back to the house safely, but I'm pretty sure from now on we will be driving the car down to wait for the bus!

Later that day, Scott went down to get the mail and called me to come look at what was making the strange noises at us that morning. A quail family was crossing our drive from one field to the next. I just had to chuckle because those tiny birds sure make one big scary noise when it's dark out!!! Never did see the skunk but that was fine by me. Trust me when I say it was closer than I wanted it to be that morning.
I was a little surprised at how much Shelby really enjoyed it. At first she was a little squeamish about the inside goop, but it didn't take her long to pull stuff out like a true champion. Of course big brother's example always helps in these situations. Listen carefully in the video though for her funny little expression everytime she pulled out a handful of stuff. Then mom helped carve out a pretty simple face with Shelby while Hunter picked out this challenging howling wolves scene from a pumpkin carving book that he wanted to do with Dad. Who makes those books for kids anyway because most of those patterns are NOT something a six year old can do on their own?! So Hunter took some turns carving Shelby's pumpkin face while Dad did a lot of the wolves. But they both turned out great and the kids LOVED lighting them up on the deck and shutting off the lights to watch them glow!
She has qualified for JESSE which is the educational special needs program in our county. We went last spring and sat in a week of class with their preschool kids. It has some days that are just JESSE kids and some days that other children attend with them. I was quite impressed with the class which is actually saying a lot since Scott and I were both set against preschool for both our kids. She will be able to receive speech and occupational therapy there, and we hope that the structure and learning will challenge her to keep moving forward in the progress she has made since coming home. I was amazed today at her confidence. She is such a different child than the one who wouldn't look at us straight in the face let alone come up to us when we met her 14 months ago. Today she grinned in excitement as the bus pulled in, climbed the big steps by herself, and waved bye-bye to me after she was all buckled in. I was about in tears because it hit me that she feels loved and secure and is confident that she will be safe and see me again in a few hours -- all major things for any child but especially for an adopted child. Even though I'm sure she can't express any of that, it was evident in her behavior. No sideways looking, no rocking, no humming...just ready for this adventure. It excited me and was a good reminder to keep looking at what she CAN do now instead of getting bogged down by what she still needs to master. Best wishes, Sweetie. Now I'm off to the grocery story by myself - how strange ;).
He was wwwaaaayyyy more nervous for this year than he was last year (not sure why). His teacher has been doing a lot of testing, procedure setting, and just getting the year off to a good start this week, so thankfully he has had no homework. Each day, he has had good things to report, so I think we are off to a good start.

The rain over the last few weeks has turned my lack-luster garden into a sudden bumper crop. Today, I snapped and canned a batch of green beans, made a batch of spaghetti sauce, and made a batch of dill pickles to use up all the crazy cucumbers. I'm exhausted, and tomorrow I get to pick beans again and make another batch of spaghetti sauce with all the tomatoes ripening in my garage that will rot over the weekend if I don't get to them.
The second trip was with the Schaetzle side of the family, so of course, it was a fishing trip. We headed to Cedarwild Resort in Deer River, MN for a week of fishing, eating fish, sleeping, fishing, eating, sleeping, fishing, fishing etc. with a couple of times of swimming thrown in to. Don't be fooled by the name resort, although I must say, this place was much nicer than others we have used. Rustic cabins with 2 bedrooms, a tiny bathroom, a kitchen/eating area, and a screen porch. However this is definitely a family place. The owners are kind and helpful and maintain an inground pool, small playground, and game room with puzzles, games, books, etc. for us to use. The best feature was two lakes, named Moose and Little Moose, on either side of the resort for boating and fishing.
So I know there are no pictures of Scott, the serious fisherman. That is for two reasons. First either Hunter or I manned the camera all of the time, and second, while bringing in a good amount of fish, Scott's one big beauty was a 21 inch walleye which he brought in at 6:30 am when fishing with Hunter and Grandpa and had to release due to lake rules. He still had a great time and was thrilled to pack and bring home almost 150 fish for our freezer. I have a feeling, we will be going back to Cedarwild for years to come!Scott and Jennifer Schaetzlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12973630359530493410noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5778160284717806278.post-25803041238005147492012-07-15T18:38:00.000-07:002012-07-15T18:38:00.643-07:00Vacation #1, Ending

Much to my dismay, I realized I did not think to take pictures as we were visiting with family or hanging out at my aunt's pool. Shelby's 3rd birthday was while we were in NY, so I have one video of her attempting to blow out her candles. She is not quite got the blowing thing down yet, and my aunt was a little nervous since she had already grabbed a lit candle.

After almost 4 days of visiting with family, we ventured on to Pennsylvania. We took the kids to the Crayola Factory in Easton, PA. Hunter, especially, uses crayons, markers, etc on almost a daily basis, so we thought this would be a fun adventure. We got to see how crayons and markers were made, collect crayons, markers, and model magic at various stations, and use various products to make small projects to take home with us. It was all very hands-on and interesting.
The first was to take our children out to where I grew up in upstate NY to meet and get to know my grandparents and some aunts and uncles. My grandfather turns 90 later this summer and had never met Shelby, and we figured that we can't take their time(this side of heaven)for granted. However we wanted to do some family things on the way out and back to break up all the hours in the car a little. Our first stop was at Train-o-rama in Marblehead, OH. It's over 1,500 sq. feet of model train layouts and old train toys and stuff. Thankfully no one else was there because Hunter was sooooo excited that he just ran from layout to layout saying, "Dad, look at this and Mom, this one has a ______." It was fun even if it was kind of visual overload. We had the kids hunting for things like what fast food joints they could find in each layout. In the videos, watch for how excited Hunter is. He keeps licking his lips and wiggling his fingers into fists. I don't think he even knows he does the last habit, but he has done it since I can remember. I think it's so cute, but it will be a dead give away on the day he chooses to propose to his girlfriend twenty years from now ;)

God surely does have a wonderful sense of humor, and yes, this picture does mean what you are thinking we might be saying. We are announcing that we are expecting our 3rd child in early to mid December. In a few days I will begin the final week of my fourth month of pregnancy. After years of trying and two losses, we were quite shocked to find that this was in God's plan for us. My doctor is having me follow a daily Lovenox injection regimen, and it seems to be working. Our shock and fears have slowly turned to hope and joy. God is certainly up to something, and it is all for His glory because we have done everything in the book "wrong". We finally sold the last of our "baby stuff" (with the exception of our carseat/stroller combo which I couldn't put in my resale) about a month before we discovered we were pregnant, and I did a number of "no-no"s as far as pregnancy is concerned including helping Shelby through an x-ray. So when I saw that steady little heartbeat blippin' on that "jellybean" in an early ultrasound, I started crying and giving God all the praise because His ways are higher than ours, that's for sure.

More than anything we ask for your prayers. We just want this whole pregnancy bathed in prayer. Pray for health for the baby, wisdom for the doctors, and peace of mind for Scott and I that we will be able to daily put aside our fears and cautiousness and just enjoy this special time in our lives. We know that nothing in life is a sure thing, but we are hopeful that God is working a miracle for us.Scott and Jennifer Schaetzlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12973630359530493410noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5778160284717806278.post-15747982803076964982012-06-19T05:36:00.000-07:002012-06-19T05:36:39.884-07:00Happy Birthdays!Last Friday, my first born baby turned six. As I was lying in bed with him the night before his birthday retelling him the story of the day he was born, I just couldn't believe how fast it all had gone. For this birthday he chose to have his best buddy, Lucas, spend the afternoon at our house. Then our families got to join us for a party after supper.

Saturday was my birthday, so my celebration is usually tagged on to Hunter's which I really don't mind (it's been 6 years now so I've had time to adjust, ha,ha). My mom wanted to make sure I had my own birthday cake this year so she brought me a mint oreo ice cream cake. It was yummy, and my brother-in-law and sister-in-law brought me taco dip and chips which I had really been craving. It was a very fun night made of good family, good food, and good memories. You can't ask for any more than that on your birthday!
It's Final!!!! Friday's court appearance was quick and easy and according to the laws of our land, Shelby is now officially ours. Sorry the picture is kind of blurry; someone else was operating my camera.

Then we came home and decided to camp out in our back yard. I managed to set up the ten by myself (ok, Scott helped get a couple stakes down into the hard ground). The kids did quite well sleeping in the tent which surprised me because it was Shelby's first time. However the grown ups decided we need a bigger tent so we can fit air mattresses in it. When did we get too old and stiff to sleep on the ground? Of course two sprawling, wiggling munchkins between us probably didn't help. It was fun, and Hunter is already begging to do it again.
Hunter has been out of school less than a week and already he has had surgery leaving him toothless in the top front of his mouth and has had 2 t-ball games. However amid the busy-ness, Shelby has had some important things going on too. Last Friday was our 1 year anniversary of the day we signed all the papers and officially received Shelby as our daughter in Manila. In the adoption world, it is sometimes called our "Gotcha Day" or our "Family Day". Whatever it's called, it was a day that really rocked our world and hers forever. I remember our feelings of excitement, being scared to death, and wondering what in the world we were doing just as any new parent feels. Now looking back at Shelby's behavior, I recognize so many signs of her being scared to death and wondering what in the world was going on too. It's amazing how far she has come in a year, and we can't wait to see how much she continues to grow and progress. We are also looking forward to another important day for us. This coming Friday will be our court date to finalize Shelby's adoption. The Philippines processes things a little differently from other countries. They want time and updates to see how the child is adjusting with their new family. Then they send the paperwork to the United States so the family can finalize the adoption in a court here. Shelby's adoption will become permanent (like it wasn't before, ha,ha), and she will be granted her "new" name and her US citizenship. So really for us, all that changes is some legal documents and how we claim her on taxes, but it is the last big step in the process our family has been working through for almost 3 years, so I'll try to post some pics this weekend.
He has had a wonderful teacher, and though it took him a few months for things to really click, he has progressed a lot. I was looking at a writing sample from the first of the school year and a recent writing sample. I can't believe the difference!
Since it is the last day, his class was going to celebrate all of the summer birthdays. So while he wouldn't let me take a last day of school picture, here are some pics of the cute pirate cupcakes, he is serving to celebrate his summer birthday.
Yesterday morning before church, my friend Toni (link) texted me that her first sow(mama pig to all you nonfarmers) was in labor. Now there is nothing cuter than little baby pigs, so I took the kids up yesterday afternoon to see the newest additions. The piglets were adorable, and the mama was very laid back and patient with all of us playing with her new babies.
I decided when we were moving Hunter into a "big boy room" that I wanted to try my hand at quilting and make a tractor quilt for his bed. That was the winter he was 2. Now he is 5, and it is finished...by the dear little old ladies in the quilting group at our church. I got the top done and even started the hand quilting. Then along came our approval to adopt Shelby, and the quilt was put away. So this is really to brag on the beautiful job that those ladies did. I'm so excited every time I see it, and Hunter loves it!
She loves the cat, which is Scott's 12 year old moody scared stuck up old lady of a cat. For some of you, these pics may be the most you've ever seen of her because Alaska runs and hides when there is a knock on the door. Shelby now squeals and tries to "love" her constantly. Most days Alaska puts up with it pretty well (must be she is feeling ignored often) but there always comes a point when the growling and hissing starts. We've warned Shelby about leaving the cat alone hundreds of time, but she has come away with a few bites. Thankfully, the cat is good; she never bites hard enough to break the skin. It's just a definite warning.
Yesterday, March 2nd was the great Dr. Seuss's birthday. So, of course, kindergarten must celebrate. Hunter's teacher told the students to dress as a Seuss character and be ready to make whamburgers for snack on Friday. At first, Hunter wanted to be the 10 footed lion from If I Ran the Zoo. I was so stumped as to how to do that one that I suggested he choose a different one. Thankfully, he chose Max the Grinch's dog from How the Grinch Stole Christmas... much easier.
Thankfully I saw a robin and 3 red-winged blackbirds on Monday, so it has given me hope that spring is approaching. Our days have just run together between sickness and routine days of work, school, and therapy. We've really pulled back in to our home during the week. We just felt that Hunter needed more sleep to keep up with school and not melt down, and Shelby just needs more home time and sleep to help with her bonding and sensory issues. This keeps us home a lot which keeps Dad very happy and drives me nuts, but I'm dealing. I like the predictability and the added degree of calmness it brings to my kids and my home.

So here are a couple cute quotes:

As overheard by Mom cleaning the kitchen after supper when kids were playing in the next room:
(Popping sound - quite loud actually)
Hunter - (laughing) Oh, I'm so glad I taught you to do that Shelby. You are such a good fart-er.

Asked by Hunter to Mom at the dinner table:

H - Tonight R (cousin) plays basketball, but when does she run and jump turtles cuz I want to watch her do that again?
Mom - I think you mean hurdles and track is a spring sport.Scott and Jennifer Schaetzlehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12973630359530493410noreply@blogger.com0
